Global outfits are missing on the fortune called car rental India

We heard it sometime back but have no clue if they had arrived. That was great traffic news at that point of time. It was reported in the Indian press that Hertz, the global car hire major was making its major forays on the India roads. For having been on the Indian turf for more than a decade it had maintained a non-descript presence.

Then it was reported that “it’s looking at expanding its fleet of 500 vehicles to over 5,000 in the next three years.” Well, one just wonders if it did. But then for a place as sub-continental size as India, that fleet must have disappeared like a drop in an ocean.

As we could see in the reports, that was only “one part of Hertz’s route map for the future. In India Hertz cars have always come driven by chauffeurs”.

It was predicted that the “Indian market was ready to get behind the steering wheel with self-drive vehicles. So customers will be able to walk into Hertz offices and drive away with a car of their choice.” Like they do anywhere else in the West?

The India CEO of for Hertz was reported saying, “self-drive is what distinguishes a taxi service from a car rental company. World over Hertz is the Largest car rental company and we plan to make it the number one in India.”

The Car rental India was slotted for a change. The world reputed car rental agency has all the plans to take car rentals in India on to a different trip. As per the global major’s investment plans the company had to invest Rs 225 crore (Rs 2.25 billion) over the next three years to buy vehicles and the infrastructure to back it. Talks were on with a financial institution for the cash, as per reports.

Did the plans fall flat, one just wonders. But then what happened to other car rental outfits? Don’t they find the Indian market lucrative enough? If they don’t they are missing on a fortune untapped.
